In Depth Review: War Thunder Jumps Straight into Multiplayer Mayhem
Since the launch of War Thunder, the game has seen plenty of amazing improvements to its already good gameplay system. Aside from being an outstanding online dogfighting game, War Thunder also offers players other modes of play such as land and naval based combat. The massive 16 on 16 team battles are a combination of fun, chaotic, unpredictable, and exciting, making it a game that is certainly worth coming back to time and again.
So Many Choices
While War Thunder strictly covers the World War 2 era of combat, War Thunder allows players to make use of a wide variety of planes in the era: even those that did not actually see combat such as prototype versions of certain models. Overall, there are a hundred upgradeable planes available in the game and even if you have no prior background knowledge of military technology with regards to planes, all the information you will need to know about the selections (name of the plane, strengths, weaknesses, and most importantly, the role of the plane) are easily found in-game.
Still, the best choices will be the ones that come from trial and error; a lot of things sound good on paper but are not quite the same when used in actual flight. Also, depending on the type of game modes you play, your plane choices will also change as well.
Dynamic Levels of Realism
For an online multiplayer game, War Thunder does provide core flight sim fans with a few interesting options. The big catch with multiplayer is that flying tends to become simplified and combat is stripped down to the bare minimum of physics. This arcade-style approach makes it easy for all player types to play together on an even level.
But for those players seeking something a little "more"; the game allows "realistic" battles to be set up as well. In this mode, aiming is made much harder by the omission of the leading reticule guide. This forces players to learn how to gauge enemy speed, trajectory, and distance manually. Flying is also made a lot more realistic with various planes being unable to perform certain maneuvers fast enough or even at all (some planes have frames so light that they would tear when reaching certain speeds or when trying to make difficult turns especially in instances of high wind resistance).
Clear Skies and More
In terms of graphics, War Thunder is a pretty looking game. The backgrounds look lush, the landscapes feel alive, and the skies feel refreshingly fun to fly in. It is easy to just fly away from the action and go sightseeing if you suddenly feel like it; and there is actually quite plenty to see. From massive cloud carpets (you will have to climb up pretty far) to massive, sprawling lands, the amount of detail in the game is nothing short of breathtaking. The actual planes themselves are wonderfully crafted. While not all offer cockpit views, the planes have been generally designed to match up with how they actually looked like in real life. As for the audio -the music is barely noticeable. You will either be too busy fighting or just enjoying the view to even mind it. The SFX on the other hand, is right on the spot.
The full game experience, however, shines the most when the game is played on the Oculus Rift. War Thunder supports the technology and turns the game into an amazing flying experience.
The Verdict: Online FTW
Obviously, if you are looking for a long single player campaign mode, then War Thunder is not a good option. But if high speed, massive aerial combat with plenty of skilled players sounds like the kind of challenge you'd like then this game is it. The mouse and keyboard controls make the arcade mode combat easy while the joystick-focused realistic mode is perfect for core fliers. War Thunder is a versatile online game with more than enough features to satisfy the flying needs of a wide range of players.
